How to Pick a TV

Buying a TV these days can be overwhelming. You're facing different types, prices, sizes, and features. There are so many acronyms to pore over and understand: HD, UHD, HDR, 3D, 4K, Smart TV, LED, OLED, and many more. It can be easy to get caught up in the hype of the latest and greatest gimmicks, but there are a few things you should focus on when you buy a new TV.

  • Go ahead and get the 4K resolution. Also known as UHD or ultra HD TVs, this technology is the future and will eventually be commonplace. Even though UHD TVs have double the resolution of HD TVs, it really won't make a difference in the quality of your viewing. Even still, you can get ahead of the curve and invest in this technology now.
  • Go big and then go home. Generally speaking, you should get the biggest TV with the best picture quality. It's your decision as to what size works for which room, but typically speaking smaller TVs are best for the bedroom and larger TVs are best for the living room.
  • HDR is a good idea. HDR (high dynamic range) is a technology that allows your TV to automatically adjust the brightness to improve color accuracy.
  • Forget these gimmicks: curved display and 3D. Curved displays don't add to picture quality. In fact, it can be a distraction. Unless you find this aesthetic pleasing, you can skip curved TVs. Regarding 3D TVs—ask yourself when it was the last time you heard about 3D TV technology. Those TVs may still be available, but major TV manufacturers have stopped making them.
  • Get a soundbar. As TV screens became thinner, so did sound quality. A soundbar can bring the richness of sound that can match the quality of your screen.

Purchasing a new TV can be a bit of a headache. But if you cut through the noise of manufacturer specifications and expired gimmickry, you can find the best TV for your needs and enjoy the new view. Come by our store to see what we can do for you!
